A MESSAGE FROM OUR FOUNDER

My Story.

 

I was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey to a single mother in humble living conditions, who did everything she could to ensure my sister and I received the education we deserved – one she was never afforded. One time she used the address of relatives to send us to a school outside of our district, but the local school board found out and that meant we were released from that school. My mother received a letter threatening to sue her. She could not afford to fight the school board and keep us in that school. So she decided to pack up everything we had and moved to the poorest part of the same suburban community so we could continue our education. Had she not done that, I might not be here building with you today. My mother is the true hero of my story. A woman that understood the value of education and knew that she needed to ensure my sister and I had every opportunity to secure our futures.

Mission.

Our mission and our purpose at The Darius Mayfield Foundation are to provide quality education and school choice to diverse communities while solving transportation problems in underserved rural and urban communities. Every student deserves a future.

 

Vision.

​

Our vision is to educate parents on their rights and options in their children’s education by being active in neighborhoods across America. A choice in education or “school choice” is not the destruction of public schools; it’s the betterment of American communities. We will accomplish this by offering grants to students to attend alternative educational institutions such as, but not limited to, Private Schools, Charter Schools, and/or Home Schools, while also working with parents and school boards to raise educational standards and adapt school transportation requirements to better serve communities. We will partner with organizations and seek funds to roll out “Transportation Gap Project,” a multi-pronged campaign to bring awareness and technological solutions to parents to help lower their current transportation barriers. We have learned so much about these issues over the past few years! I am confident in our team and board. These are dedicated individuals who are currently active and have a proven track record of success in problem solving. We are all eager to combine forces and multiply efforts going forward.

My Promise.

I promise to work hard and stay committed to these causes, as I not only care about them, but have lived the reality that so many in these conditions face daily. This is a personal mission for me and one that directly connects with exactly who I am and where I am from. This is an issue that affects a multitude of diverse communities. Through our shared work and effort, I hope understanding, togetherness, and compassion will grow in our communities.  I promise to continue being a leading voice in the fight to bring education, unity, and understanding to American communities every single day as we fight to keep the American Dream alive for ALL of her citizens.

In the coming months, our first goal for The Darius Mayfield Foundation will be a sweepstakes, offering an award of up to $500 to New Jersey residents to help pay an overdue auto bill. Multiple winners are expected monthly! Another first step toward unblocking transportation barriers is our vehicle-giveaway program in partnership with Mayfield Motors. We are also in the early stages of planning our inaugural gala where an educational scholarship will be awarded to a deserving student.
